The battle began on the fifth day of the new year, 130 AC. Sharako Lohar divided the Triarchy's ships into two squadrons, attacking the north and south of Dragonstone at sunrise, catching House Velaryon's fleet by surprise.

Prince Jacaerys Velaryon, flying on Vermax, descended upon the Lysene galleys. Despite their experience fighting Prince Daemon Targaryen and his dragon, Caraxes, the Triarchy's ships soon caught fire. Jacaerys was joined by Ulf the White on Silverwing, Nettles on Sheepstealer, Addam Velaryon on Seasmoke, and Hugh Hammer on Vermithor, causing the enemy fleet to scatter.

However, Vermax flew too low and crashed into the sea, possibly hit by a crossbow bolt. Jacaerys leapt free but was killed by Myrish crossbowmen.

The battle raged into the night. High Tide and Lord Corlys Velaryon's treasures were destroyed.
