The Maiar were spirits that descended into Ëa to help the Valar shape the world. Though they were numerous, only a few were named, and even fewer took physical forms in Middle-Earth. As Ainur, the Maiar were powerful beings, though less so than the Valar. The most notable of the Maiar included Eönwë, the banner-bearer of Manwë, and Ilmarë, the handmaiden of Varda.
Each Maia was associated with a specific Vala: Ossë and Uinen, spirits of the sea, served Ulmo; Curumo, later known as Saruman, served Aulë; and Melian served both Vána and Estë. Other notable Maiar included Mairon, who became Sauron, Aiwendil, known as Radagast, and Olórin, better known as Gandalf.
The Blue Wizards journeyed east, their fate unknown. The Balrogs, originally Maiar, were corrupted by Melkor (Morgoth) and became his most terrifying servants. These dark spirits served as powerful adversaries in Middle-Earth.
