The Wizards of Middle-earth, known as the Istari, are Maiar—lesser spirits sent by the Valar to aid the free peoples during the Third Age. These beings take the form of Men but possess immense physical and mental power. Their mission is to help counter Sauron, a powerful fallen Maia. The most prominent Wizards are Gandalf the Grey and Saruman the White, with Radagast the Brown and two Blue Wizards also mentioned briefly. Saruman, initially the head of the White Council, succumbs to the temptation of power and mirrors Sauron’s ambition, eventually becoming his servant. In contrast, Gandalf remains steadfast, guiding the Fellowship in their quest to destroy the One Ring and defeat Sauron. As Saruman falls, Gandalf rises to become the White Wizard, taking Saruman’s place. Gandalf is often compared to the Norse god Odin in his wanderer guise and is also seen as a Christ-like figure in Tolkien’s mythology.
