Before Aegon's Conquest, the area that would become King's Landing was just hills and forests, claimed by both Storm King Argilac Durrandon and Harren Hoare, King of the Isles and Rivers. The mouth of the Blackwater Rush had been ruled by various petty kings, but their towers and forts were long destroyed. When Aegon Targaryen landed on the north bank of the Blackwater Rush in 2 BC, only a small village of fisherfolk remained. Aegon built his first fortress, the Aegonfort, on the highest hill. After completing his conquest, Aegon chose this location for his capital instead of Dragonstone or Oldtown, recognizing its central location and independence from former kingdoms. King's Landing quickly grew, becoming a city in 10 AC, and by 25 AC, it was the realm's third-largest city. The city walls and seven gates were completed the following year.
