Hugh Hammer, a blacksmith's bastard on Dragonstone, rose to prominence during the Dance of the Dragons when he mounted Vermithor, the dragon of the late King Jaehaerys I. He fought valiantly for the blacks in the Battle of the Gullet and later claimed the name "Hugh Hammer."

After King's Landing fell, Hugh was knighted by Rhaenyra Targaryen and granted lands on Driftmark, though his ambitions grew. 

In 130 AC, Hugh and Ulf White were sent to defend Tumbleton but defected to the greens. Hugh declared himself "Lord Hammer and desired to become king.
