Khazad-dûm, the greatest of all Dwarf strongholds, was founded by Durin the Deathless deep within the Misty Mountains. Durin came upon the shimmering lake Kheled-zâram, beneath the mountain Celebdil, and began constructing what would become a legendary city. Ruled by Durin's descendants, Khazad-dûm thrived for millennia, known far and wide for its vast wealth and craftsmanship. A rare friendship with the Elves of Eregion led to the creation of the magical West-gate, and King Durin III received one of the Rings of Power. However, after Sauron's forces overran Eregion in II 1697, Khazad-dûm’s gates were sealed. The city's prosperity continued, built on its rich mithril mines, but in III 1980, the Dwarves delved too deep and unleashed a Balrog, Durin’s Bane. The creature drove the Dwarves from their ancient home, leaving it to darkness. After two failed reclamation attempts, Durin VII finally succeeded, restoring Khazad-dûm to its former glory.
