Unbeknownst to Celebrimbor, Sauron had woven a binding magic into the rings he taught the Elves to craft. In secret, Sauron forged the One Ring, a master ring to control all the lesser rings and grant him dominion over Middle-earth. When Sauron placed the One Ring on his finger, the Elves realized his true identity and intentions. Defiant, Celebrimbor and the Elves of Eregion refused to give Sauron the rings. The three greatest rings had been forged by Celebrimbor alone, untouched by Sauron, making them uncorrupted, though still subject to the power of the One Ring. He sent these rings away for safekeeping: Vilya and Narya to Gil-galad in Lindon, and Nenya to Galadriel in Lórien. Enraged, Sauron attacked Eregion, devastating the land and capturing Celebrimbor. Under brutal torture, he revealed the location of the lesser rings but refused to disclose where the three Elven rings were hidden. He was ultimately killed, and his body used as a banner by Sauron's forces.
