The Nazgûl, also called Ringwraiths or Black Riders, were once mortal men corrupted by Sauron through the Nine Rings of Power. Their most terrifying ability was the fear they inspired, known as the Black Breath, which could cause illness and death to those who came under its shadow. Their shrill cries struck terror into the bravest hearts, paralyzing warriors and animals alike. Even without being seen, their presence filled the air with dread.

Physically, the Nazgûl wielded formidable weapons like swords, black darts, and the Witch-king's Morgul-knife, which wounded Frodo and almost drew him into the wraith-world. The Witch-king also used a deadly mace during the Battle of the Pelennor Fields. However, they were not invincible, and special enchanted weapons, like Merry’s blade of Westernesse, could harm them.

Existing mainly in the wraith-world, they needed cloaks and steeds to interact with the living. Their senses were heightened in darkness, and they could detect living beings, especially drawn to the One Ring.
