The legendary Field of Fire, where Aegon Targaryen and his dragons unleashed their fiery might. The two armies met on the plains south of the Blackwater, near the present-day Goldroad. King Mern of House Gardener and King Loren of House Lannister aimed to flank Aegon's forces. Aegon and his sisters, Visenya and Rhaenys, formed a defensive crescent and took to the air on their dragons: Balerion, Meraxes, and Vhagar. They set the dry fields aflame, trapping the Gardener and Lannister armies. Positioned safely upwind, Lord Mooten’s Targaryen forces finished off the soldiers emerging from the fire. King Loren fled through the flames.

The dragons' fire claimed 4,000 lives, including King Mern and his kin, and wiped out the Order of the Green Hand. Another thousand perished from weapons, and 10,000 suffered burns. The Targaryens lost fewer than 100 men, though Visenya was wounded. This battle, the only one where all three Targaryen dragons fought together, became known as the Field of Fire.
