The Best Garden Swing Styles

Elevate your outdoor space with a cosy, attractive garden swing.

Figuring out which one to choose (out of the hundreds of options out there) will ultimately depend on the style of your home, your budget, personal taste, and the logistical aspects of how much space you have to work with. But we’ve put together some of our favourite styles to help you find a good starting point so you can find the right garden swing chair for you and your family.

Egg Chair Swings

The original egg chair swing was conceived in 1959, going on to become a true icon of the swinging ‘60s with its playful form and bohemian aesthetic. Most modern egg chair swings have one more advantage: they are supremely comfortable because of their ergonomic shaping. When it comes to materials, “natural” isn’t always the right choice for outdoor furniture. Going faux can be extremely beneficial. You’ll find plenty of high-end chairs made of polyethylene rattan-effect material, which is highly durable and weather-resistant. It does a great job of looking like the real thing, in terms of tonal variations and natural textures.

Canopy Swings

Canopy swings are free-standing, meaning they don’t need anything to hang from. They also come in built-in shade, so they’re a great choice for a sunny spot on your patio or garden. Unlike traditional wooden swings, canopy swings tend to have plush seating and newer models have a sleek and modern look that makes them a good choice for houses with stucco or vinyl siding.

Partition Swings

If you want to segregate your outdoor space a little, consider a partition swing. It’s a great choice for a long patio, especially if you want to have separate areas for barbecuing and seating. Partition swings tend to be minimal in design and structure, but you can find more elaborate ones as well.

Plastic Wicker Swings

Plastic wicker swings are ideal for outdoor settings, especially if you live in an area with harsh or varied weather conditions. They are usually available in dark colours (greys, blacks and browns) which make them stain-resistant and easy to clean. Upholster them with comfortable cushions in bright colours or muted shades, depending on your personal preferences.

Wooden Swings

Wooden furniture is not always ideal for the outdoors, but there are unexpected benefits. The first one is obvious. It looks great. A wooden swing set will be the perfect fit for a garden that has wooden fencing or decking. And since wood is a natural material, your swing will age with the weather conditions, so you’ll get that very charmingly rustic and distressed look. Just make sure the wood is treated correctly. Because wooden swings are so popular, they tend to come with a variety of fittings and extras and are available in a wide range of size and color.
