Morgoth, once called Melkor, was Tolkien's most powerful villain and the origin of all evil. As the mightiest of the Ainur, he ranked above even the Valar, the world’s guardians. Unlike his peers, Morgoth sought domination, corrupting and bending all he touched. His power was immense; he could alter the world’s landscapes with ease, destroy or consume creations, and spread darkness. However, Morgoth's greatest flaw was his arrogance. He dismissed threats and grew overconfident, eventually losing strength as he poured his malice into the world. Morgoth’s tyranny led to significant clashes, such as when the Elven King Fingolfin wounded him, and his former ally Ungoliant nearly devoured him. His ultimate defeat came from his inability to understand compassion, believing the Valar would ignore his cruelty. But they intervened, allowing Eärendil to overcome Morgoth’s dragon and end his reign. Bound in chains, he was cast into the Timeless Void, a fate worse than death.
