On the fourth day of battle, Fingon retreated and joined his brother Turgon on the plains of Anfauglith. Hours later, Maedhros' forces appeared, lifting the spirits of the Elves as they believed victory was near. However, Morgoth unleashed his full might, sending wolves, dragons, and Balrogs led by Glaurung, splitting the forces of Fingon and Turgon from Maedhros. This conflict, known as the Battle of Unnumbered Tears, became one of the most devastating defeats for the Elves. Fingon, along with the Men of Dor-lómin led by Húrin, was surrounded. He bravely faced Gothmog, Lord of Balrogs, but was killed by Gothmog's black axe after another Balrog bound him with a whip. They beat him into the dust with their maces, and his banner, they trod into the mire of his blood. With Fingon's death, his brother Turgon became High King of the Noldor, while Húrin was captured and tortured by Morgoth.
