The Valyrian Freehold rose in Essos as the Valyrians, once peaceful shepherds, discovered and tamed dragons from the volcanic Fourteen Flames.
Their mastery of magic and dragons led to the establishment of Valyria, a city of soaring towers and legendary forges.
The Valyrians clashed with the Old Empire of Ghis in five brutal wars, ultimately destroying Ghis and expanding their influence over Slaver's Bay. As their power grew, the Valyrians faced the Rhoynar, culminating in the migration of the Rhoynar to Dorne under Queen Nymeria.
The Valyrians also settled on Dragonstone, but their dominance ended with the Doom of Valyria in 102 BC, a cataclysmic event that shattered the peninsula, wiped out most dragons, and led to the Freehold's collapse into the Century of Blood, leaving only the Free Cities and Slaver’s Bay as remnants of their empire.
