The Third Age began over four thousand years after the first rising of the Moon and Sun, following Sauron's defeat by the Last Alliance and Isildur’s planting of the White Tree in Minas Anor. It ended more than three thousand years later with the destruction of the One Ring and Sauron’s final downfall, as well as the passing of the Ring-bearers into the West.
This era is most known for the events of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings. The Third Age’s history largely centers around the Dúnedain in Gondor and Arnor, both of which grew to great power before falling into decline.
Key events include Gondor’s wars with Easterlings, the division of Arnor, the arrival of the Wizards, the founding of the Shire, the destruction of Angmar, the awakening of Durin’s Bane, and the reunification of the Dúnedain kingdoms under Aragorn II Elessar.
