During Robert's Rebellion, King Aerys II Targaryen impregnated Queen Rhaella after burning his Hand of the King, Lord Qarlton Chelsted, for opposing his wildfire plot. Following the death of Crown Prince Rhaegar Targaryen at the Battle of the Trident, Aerys sent Rhaella and Prince Viserys to Dragonstone for safety. In 283 AC, the Sack of King's Landing led to the deaths of the remaining Targaryens in the capital, and Robert Baratheon claimed the Iron Throne. Queen Rhaella died giving birth to Daenerys during a ferocious storm on Dragonstone, the Targaryens' last stronghold. Stannis Baratheon later captured Dragonstone, but Ser Willem Darry smuggled Viserys, Daenerys, and a wet nurse to Braavos just before the assault. With the fall of Dragonstone, the Targaryens lost their final hold in the Seven Kingdoms, forcing Viserys and Daenerys into exile until Darry's death in Braavos.
