Ar-Pharazôn the Golden was the last King of Númenor, seizing the throne from the rightful Queen Míriel in II 3255. Known for his ambition, Ar-Pharazôn led the powerful Númenórean armies to Middle-earth to challenge Sauron. So great was Númenor's might that Sauron's forces abandoned him without a fight. Sauron, recognizing the opportunity to manipulate his enemy, pretended to surrender and was brought back to Númenor. Over time, he gained the trust of Ar-Pharazôn and, in his cunning, convinced the King to defy the Valar and seek immortality. In II 3319, Ar-Pharazôn sailed a massive fleet to Aman, the forbidden land of the Valar. However, as he set foot on Aman, Númenor was destroyed, swallowed by the sea in punishment. Only a few, like Elendil and his sons, escaped the Downfall, returning to Middle-earth where they established the kingdoms of Arnor and Gondor, though these were mere echoes of Númenor's greatness.
