The Battle of the Trident was the decisive conflict of Robert's Rebellion, fought between rebel and royal forces at the Trident, later known as the ruby ford. The battle ended in a rebel victory. Prince Lewyn Martell led the Dornishmen on the royal side, threatening Robert Baratheon’s left flank, but Ser Lyn Corbray broke their charge, killing Lewyn in the process. Amidst the chaos, Robert and Prince Rhaegar Targaryen engaged in single combat in the river. Robert's warhammer struck Rhaegar so forcefully that the rubies on Rhaegar's armor scattered, giving the ford its name. With Rhaegar dead, the royal army fled back to King’s Landing.
